I just had a reg. check-up did a standard CBC w/ liver and kidney. My tests came back with abnormal results the Dr. said she'll refer me to hematology but didn't say why. Everything came back within normal values except WBC 2.8 low (norm 4.0-11.0), Platelet 118 low (norm 150-400), Eosinophil 4.5 high (norm 0.0-4.0), absolute lymphocyte 0.7 low (norm 1.2-4.5). Could someone give me a clue why I need a hematology? I have searched online and don't get any kind of clear direction to look. BTW All labs done 2/2006 came back normal.I have Grave's but under control for 10 yrs RI 8yrs ago. current TSH 1.26. My last HIV was neg 4 yrs ago. I was also starting to come down with a cold. Please gimme a clue what might be going on, I'm getting worried but Dr. wants to wait a month and repeat a CBC and then if needed a referral. A MONTH!! I am going to have shot nerves by then!!

    • Blood counts can flexuate at any given time. The reason your doctor wants to wait a month to repeat a CBC is to determine if this is a trend in your counts, or was just a *blip*. A number of things can cause your counts to go down, if you had any type of infection, before your test, your bone marrow may have been hyper-stimulated and basically "shot it's big guns" to combate the infection. Now, it has nothing left in it's arsenal and is in recovery from this episode, such reflecting a lower than normal WBC. As far as platelets go, they are the first cell to suffer, during this and last to recover. If your counts continue to stay low, a BMB would be in order, just to take a closer look. But as the last poster noted, that's just the way they run, and all test for them were normal.

Your doctor is just being thorough.

    • If you search the archives, you'll probably come across some of my posts. I also have low wbc that persists. Have had all the tests, including bone marrow biopsy, and haven't found a cause. I rarely get a cold, so go figure.

Try not to worry too much! I had myself totally freaked out - especially while waiting for the BMB results!

      Good luck!
